WELCOME TO BRAINSTORM
An Overview
Brainstorm is a revolutionary new product designed to enhance
office communication. It does so by combining e-mail and group
topic discussions in a single, easy to use application. Before
presenting the operational aspects and installation instructions
for the program, let's take a minute to review some examples of how
Brainstorm can enhance your office communication. As the
Brainstorm supervisor, you will act as the support person for
operational problems, and your methods of using Brainstorm will
serve as an example to be followed by the users. Creative
operation by the supervisor will lead to creative and profitable
use by other users. Let's explore a series of example topics.
Public Topic Example
Suppose your company has determined that your current phone system
is not meeting the needs of your customers and staff. You could
make use of Brainstorm's features to help ensure that the change
to a new system would be a positive improvement. You might first
begin a public topic discussion asking everyone to contribute their
feelings about the pros and cons of the current system. Let them
tell you the good features it has as well as its shortcomings.
After discussion in Brainstorm for a week or so you should have a
significant amount of information from your staff as to just what
they need versus what they have. Print a copy of the entire topic
thread for review by the Phone System Committee and close the topic
discussion.
"By Request" Topic Example
Now that you have the feedback of the end users, you can form the
Phone System Committee by soliciting members from among your staff.
You want those with specific skills in this area, and perhaps there
are some individuals that are more qualified than others. You can
use Brainstorm to find out who these individuals are by starting a
second topic asking for volunteers to sit on the Phone System
Committee. Rather than start a public topic, start a private
topic "by request" topic. Make the topic "by request", meaning
that interested parties cannot join directly, but instead "request"
joining by leaving a reply indicating their desire, and stating
their qualifications. The topic manager can then read the requests
from users and add those he wants to the topic discussion. In this
private discussion the members can review the list of alternative
systems available on the market given the user needs printed from
the previous topic discussion. The committee goal is to make a
recommendation as to which phone system meets those needs the best.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
7
Brainstorm Supervisor's Guide
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Private Topic Example
After the committee has come up with the names and prices of
several systems that meet the user needs, they can terminate the
topic and turn the results over to the management team for action.
Since management will want to discuss the issue as well, they
would start a private, closed topic which is open only to the
managers. They may involve the committee chair or other
individuals, but all members would be specifically invited to join
via e-mail rather than an open invitation. The final decision then
is made and the right system can hopefully be purchased due to
input from a large cross-section of system users.
The aforementioned scenario could be completed within a week or
two, and could involve the entire staff of perhaps hundreds of
people. Brainstorm is the only way of distilling the thoughts and
input of a large group without a face to face meeting, and does so
without the clutter, overhead, and physical accommodations needed
for such a gathering.
These examples show how you could use public topic messages in
combination with both semi-private and private topics to
streamline company-wide discussions.<N> Together with Brainstorm's
e-mail system it amounts to a complete network idea and message
management program.
Features
Context-sensitive help throughout the program covering all features
and menu selections.
Easy, intuitive user interface to encourage participation in topic
discussions.
Drop-down menus, pop-up windows, and full mouse support for smooth,
intuitive operation.
Fully configurable editor, preset to use standard IBM editing keys
and the popular WordStar command keystrokes.
Private electronic mailboxes for every user.

Brainstorm Supervisor's Guide
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Installation
This manual, the BRAINSTORM SUPERVISOR AND INSTALLATION GUIDE, is
intended for use by the Brainstorm system supervisor. It addresses
the setup, installation, and maintenance of a network-wide
Brainstorm session. A separate manual, the BRAINSTORM USER'S
GUIDE, provides operational instructions for individual LAN users.
For LAN installations where a prior version of Brainstorm is
already installed, you should create a printout of all Brainstorm
topics for archive purposes. Unfortunately, database and other
program changes are so extensive with the advent of version 2.0
that conversion of the previous message and user files is not
possible. We recommend that you close out the old Brainstorm topic
discussions with a message informing users that a new release is
being installed, and that duplicates of active topics will be
created. The Install program will automatically create a
subdirectory to contain the Brainstorm files if it doesn't exist.
We will assume the subdirectory name is BS, although it may be any
valid subdirectory name. Set your network security for this area
so that users who will be involved in Brainstorm sessions have
access to read and write files. In the event you wish to exclude a
certain class of users from the Brainstorm session, set that group
of users' security to prevent them from having any access to this
area. Access to any single topic can be controlled from within
Brainstorm.
Copying to the Network
The Brainstorm files on the distribution diskettes (or in the
electronically distributed files) are stored in a compressed format
to save space, and can only be extracted by using the installation
program on the distribution diskettes.
Before beginning the installation, make backup copies of your
distribution diskettes (if obtained on diskette) using the DOS
DISKCOPY command. Label the new diskettes completely and use the
new copies for this installation procedure.
Place the distribution diskette in drive A: (or any other diskette
drive) and begin the installation procedure by typing
A:INSTALL [ENTER]
If you have obtained the files through electronic distribution you
can simply start the installation process from the hard disk
location of the files obtained.
This command can be entered from any location, as long as the drive
specifier (the A: in our example) reflects the diskette drive
where the distribution diskette is located.
The installation program displays a screen window on the top 10
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

the Brainstorm destination directory.

The archive directory is the drive and path (if any) where the
compressed Brainstorm files are located, usually A: from above.
The Brainstorm destination is the location where you want to store
the program and its support files for access on the network. This
is usually a network drive in a directory called BS, and will be
created if it does not already exist.
Use the cursor keys to move around the installation screen and
enter the correct information for each of the items requested. If
you are re-installing Brainstorm and want to avoid overwriting some
of the files already on the network disk, you can set Confirm
overwrite to Y which results in a prompt before overwriting any
existing file in the destination directory. When you are ready to
perform the installation, highlight the word Go and press [ENTER].
During the installation process the lower 14 lines of the screen
display the activity taking place. When completed you are returned
to DOS and placed in the Brainstorm directory. Store your
distribution diskettes in a safe place along with the backup
copies.
Before starting the Brainstorm program you must first run the
configuration program BSCONFIG.EXE.

Edit Configuration Options
The highlight bar will be positioned over the OPTIONS menu choice,
the only section needed for this quick configuration. Select it
and complete the seven questions above the separator line. There
are few configuration choices in this area, but all are necessary
for operation. Fill in the name of the person responsible for
management of the Brainstorm program. The name entered here will
be the person who is in control of all major maintenance of the
Brainstorm area. Next enter the directory path for the data files
used to save the messages, followed by the appropriate network
type. Change the network type by pressing the spacebar until the
correct network name is displayed. Alter the TSR hot key and path
options if needed and the quick configuration is complete. After
setting the above seven options you can exit and save your
configuration choices. You can skip the remainder of this section

and proceed to Section Three, Workstation Setup. It contains
important information, especially for network environments other
than Novell.
Full Configuration
Start BSCONFIG now by typing BSCONFIG [ENTER] in the Brainstorm
directory. There are two command line options available when
starting BSCONFIG, /M and /C. The /M switch forces a monochrome
display and /C forces color, overriding the internal video mode
detection feature. Use of these switches may be useful on systems
which are set to a different mode when BSCONFIG is started.
Before we begin the explanation of the program configuration, lets
take a few minutes to become familiar with the user interface used
throughout Brainstorm and the installation program.
Highlight and select OPTIONS from the menu to use as an example
screen for this discussion.
User Interface
--------------
The BSCONFIG screens are operated by either mouse click or cursor
selection. Both BSCONFIG and Brainstorm make use of scroll bars on
window regardless of whether or not a mouse is used.
Keyboard Use
Throughout Brainstorm items can be selected by pressing the
highlighted key from a menu choice, or by moving the highlight bar
over the desired choice and pressing [ENTER]. When using the
keyboard, the mouse scroll bars remain visible as a reference to
location of the screen within a window. You can move around in a
scrollable window using the arrow or PgUp and PgDn, Home and End
keys. A complete list of key combinations is contained in the
EDITOR section of the User's Guide and the appendix to this manual.
Mouse Use
A mouse may be used within Brainstorm to select almost any menu
choice. Move the mouse cursor over the desired item and click the
left mouse button once. If the selection using a mouse entails
changing windows as well as making a selection choice it may
require a second click or "double click" to finalize the selection.
The scroll bars provide a number of additional features with a
mouse as follows:
Scroll up/down one display screen - Clicking on the small arrows at
the ends of the scroll bars move the visible screen up or down one

screen. To operate, move the mouse cursor to the scroll up or down
arrow and press the left mouse button once. To continue scrolling
press the mouse button repeatedly. For large movements use the
scroll bar instead.
Scroll to position - Using the scroll bar you can easily move to
any position by moving the scroll bar slider. The slider is the
highlighted portion, which represents your current screen position
in relation to the entire available window display.

To operate, move the mouse cursor to the scroll bar and click at
the position desired. The scroll slider and the screen will change
to display that portion of the window.
The shaded area above and below the scroll slider indicates how
much of the window is not displayed. For instance, if the slider
is positioned with one fourth of the shaded area above it and
three-fourths below it, then you are located one quarter of the way
through the window.
To move to any position within the window you may click on the

Supervisor Name
The name entered here will be the person who is in control of all
major maintenance of the Brainstorm area. The supervisor can
access any message, add and control any topic, and maintain users
on the system. Do keep in mind that if the BSCONFIG.EXE program is
made available to users they can easily modify the name of the
supervisor. If security of messages is of utmost importance you
should remove the BSCONFIG program from the Brainstorm directory,
and be aware that although message access may be controlled from
within Brainstorm, that the message data file is not encrypted at
this time. It is possible that a user could view the unformatted,
raw message information from DOS and therefore access private
messages, although with some difficulty. An encrypted release is
in development.
Path for Data Files
Enter the pathname for the message and user databases, and the help
file. The Brainstorm subdirectory is a logical choice for these
files.

Network Used
The available choices for this option are displayed by pressing the
spacebar. The choices available are:
Novell - Select this choice for any supported version of Novell's
Netware. Brainstorm will set the node ID automatically. Use of
the environment variable for node ID is not required using Novell.
3-COM - Select this choice for any version of 3-COM network
software. Depending on the version of your network, it may be able
to auto-set the BSID. If Brainstorm is unable to set the ID it
will indicate that you need to use the environment command SET
BSID=# Details are covered in Section Three, Workstation Setup.
DOS 3.x Share - Select this choice for any network which is not
specifically listed below that supports or emulates the Share
command. First try MsMachName to determine if your network can
auto-set the BSID. Requires the use of the environment command SET
BSID=# Details are covered in Section Three, Workstation Setup.
MsMachName - Used with networks which support the DOS machine name
coding scheme. Use this setting as a first choice for any network
not listed by name in any other setting. Many networks use the
machine name/identification scheme, and will properly set the
Brainstorm ID with this setting. If Brainstorm complains that the
BSID variable is required, then you will need to use the
environment command SET BSID=# Details are covered in Section
Three, Workstation Setup.
CBISNet - Now called Network O/S. If Brainstorm complains that the
BSID variable is required, then you will need to make use of the
environment command SET BSID=# Details are covered in Section
Three, Workstation Setup..
PCMOS 386 - Network from the Software Link. Does NOT require use
of the environment setting of node ID.
Vines - Banyan Vines. If Brainstorm complains that the BSID
variable is required, then you will need to make use of the
environment command SET BSID=# Details are covered in Section
Three, Workstation Setup.
NTNX - PC Slave card network. If Brainstorm complains that the BSID
variable is required, then you will need to make use of the
environment command SET BSID=# Details are covered in Section
Three, Workstation Setup.
No Network - Used when operating without file and record locking in
a single user environment.

Path for swap file
This path is used for the temporary swap file created if EMS is not
used for a DOS shell. The Brainstorm subdirectory is a logical
choice for this temporary swap file. If individual users want to
locate the swap file on a fast local disk the path can be changed
individually with a command line switch.
TSR Related Options
Primary hot key
To activate Brainstorm as a TSR (terminate and stay resident)
program, you can configure two sets of keypresses. Either the
primary or secondary hot key can be used to activate Brainstorm as
a TSR. To select a hotkey combination press [ENTER] for a
selection window. After highlighting your first key choice, press
[ENTER] to select a second optional key group if desired.

may be used to activate Brainstorm as a TSR. Two hot key options
are available since individual users may have different TSRs
loaded, one of which may conflict with one of Brainstorm's hot key
assignments. Either hot key will activate Brainstorm.
Path for swap file
This path represents the directory used to hold the temporary
Brainstorm program files and information when it is loaded as a
TSR. The Brainstorm subdirectory is a logical choice for this
temporary swap file. If individual users want to locate the swap
file on a fast local disk the path can be changed individually with
a command line switch. There is no problem with multiple users
utilizing the same path since each individual swap file uses a
unique filename.
If users have expanded memory in their workstations, Brainstorm
will take advantage of it and swap in and out of TSR mode by
swapping to EMS. The advantage is much quicker access than loading
and saving the entire program to disk each time. In either case,
about 6K of conventional memory is used for the Brainstorm reload
code. Brainstorm can be forced to always swap to disk, even if
enough EMS is present through use of a command line switch.
The on-screen line between the Path for swap file and the Editor
Default Options represents the end of the quick configuration
settings. The remainder of the configuration is optional, and
allows customization of many additional Brainstorm default
settings.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Editor Default Options
The editor options are configurable by the Brainstorm supervisor
and will be used as the default settings for all users. Some
settings may be altered on an individual user basis, while others
represent system-wide settings. User configurable settings will be
noted in the descriptions where they apply.
Auto indent
When set to Y, auto indent causes every line to be indented to the
position of the previous line. This default setting may be
overridden as a matter of preference by each user.
Delete joins lines
This selection controls whether pressing the Del key at the end of
a line causes the next line (lower) to join the current line. The
result of joining lines in this fashion creates long lines which
must be reformatted with ^B. This setting is preferred for
editing by many users. This default setting may be overridden as a
matter of preference by each user.
Indent starts paragraph
A Y choice indicates that the editor should regard any indented
line as a separate paragraph when performing paragraph
reformatting. It is useful to set this to Y if your paragraphs are
not separated by a blank line, but rather by simply indenting the
first line.
Smart tabs
Normally, when the Tab key is pressed the cursor normally moves to
the right the distance set for tabs (configurable below). When
smart tabs are activated, the distance the cursor moves is
determined by the previous line. Each press of Tab moves the
cursor below the beginning of the next word in the line above,
making it easy to fill in tables, lists, etc. This default may be
overridden as a matter of preference by each user.
Tab size
The default tab size is eight characters. This option is only used
if smart tabs are not active. This default may be overridden as a
matter of preference by each user.
Word wrap
Setting word wrap to Y results in automatic formatting at the line
length specified for each users screen. The default line length is
76 characters. A N setting will allow line length to extend to 255
characters without wrapping to the next line. Word wrap only takes
effect when text is entered, not when lines are joined and split
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
20
Brainstorm Supervisor's Guide
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
during editing. Reformatting with ^B may become necessary during
editing even with word wrap enabled. This default may be
overridden as a matter of preference by each user.
Wrap at column 1
This option determines if the left arrow key will move the cursor
from the beginning of one line to the end of the previous line. If
set to N the left arrow key will do nothing at the beginning of a
line.

Application Menus
This section allows the supervisor to establish user options to run
other programs from within Brainstorm. It creates a drop-down menu
listing up to ten program names.
This is a very powerful Brainstorm feature which can allow your LAN
users to stay in Brainstorm virtually all the time and use it as a
menu to access all other needed applications. You could easily set
up a configuration which loads Brainstorm each morning and lets
users check messages. When finished reading and adding replies,
they could enter word processing or a database program through the
Applications menu. After leaving each application users are
immediately returned to Brainstorm, and again have the opportunity
to access mail. Brainstorm only occupies 6K when other programs are
accessed, making virtually all conventional memory available to the
application.
For installations where many users access less than ten application
programs on a regular basis, Brainstorm can provide both messaging
and application program menu support.

Application Menu Option #0
Description
This field and the nine which follow allows you to place the
name of any application program within Brainstorm's
Application menu. For example, placing the name TIMESLIPS
here would allow a user to access the time and billing program
TIMESLIPS from within Brainstorm, and return to Brainstorm
after completion. It is a text field which will be displayed
on the Applications menu.
File path
Place the full pathname and program name of the application
to be executed in this field. Our example might have the path
and program specified as
F:\TIMESLIP\TSREPORT.EXE
When the menu option is selected Brainstorm will shell to DOS
leaving about 10K in memory, and execute the program requested.
The balance of the Application Menu options operate in the same
manner.

Color
If you would like to alter the colors used by Brainstorm select the
Colors menu choice with the keyboard or mouse. The color setup
screen consists of two screen windows, the activity window on the
right and the color selection window on the left. The activity
window contains descriptions of the program areas and allows
settings for both color and monochrome screens. If a user has a
monochrome screen the mono settings are used. Color selections are
indicated by hexadecimal values which can be entered directly or
generated by use of the selection window on the left.
Begin by selecting a program area to modify with either the
keyboard or mouse. When an area is selected (double-click or press
ENTER), the active window changes to the color selection window and
places a box around the active color for that program area. Move
the box using the arrow keys or mouse and select the color desired.

Changes are made by selecting the item to change (by highlighting
the keystroke to alter with the cursor and pressing ENTER, or by a
double-click), which displays a small window for entering the
replacement keystrokes. The replacement keystrokes are made by
pressing the actual keys desired, i.e., press the up arrow or the
Ctrl Key with a letter key, etc..

angle brackets. Pressing Ctrl R (^R) when no key definitions are
pending restores the original values prior to editing.

The editor configuration screen works exactly like the reader, and
allows three sets of keystrokes for each editor function. These
are arranged as three columns adjacent to each editor function
description. Changes are made by selecting the item to change (by

Pick Lists (Selection Screens)
This section allows configuration of the keystrokes used to move
the cursor and highlight bar when Brainstorm asks the user to make
a selection. The Topic Control Screen is an example of where
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

these keystrokes are used. Again, we recommend using the defaults
since they are referenced in the User's Guide and the pick-list
help text.
Menus
This selection allows configuration of the keystrokes for menu
activation. We suggest that they not be modified. These
keystrokes are referenced in the User's Guide as the defaults, and
follow industry standards.

Workstation Setup
Setting the Node ID
Brainstorm Supervisor's Guide
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
File and record locking
Brainstorm fully supports file and record locking for network use.
It automatically handles these operations with Novell 2.0a or above
and Banyan Vines 2.x and above. It also operates automatically
with any LAN that makes use of or emulates DOS 3.x file and record
locking internally. Note that networks which do not emulate the
DOS SHARE operation internally may require loading the SHARE
program before running Brainstorm (SHARE is included on your DOS
diskettes). Novell and Vines do not require SHARE, and some others
may not as well. Check your network manual for details. If you
want to operate the program by loading it from a non-network drive
(even if the PC is connected to a network), you'll have to run
SHARE first.
If Brainstorm doesn't find a network or the SHARE code, it will
complain with a message indicating that a network was not found.
For single user operation and testing you can set the network type
during installation to "no network". The locking code will be
bypassed and the SHARE program will not be required.
Workstation Identification
Each workstation making use of Brainstorm must have a unique
identification number in order for the file and record locking
techniques to operate properly. This ID number is automatically
assigned when operating under Novell and PCMOS 386. For all other
network environments first attempt to operate Brainstorm without
the BSID setting, and the network type set to MsMachName if the
network type is not specifically listed. If Brainstorm cannot find
a network ID, it will complain with an error message indicating
that the BSID variable must be set for each workstation. If
needed, this is accomplished through a portion of DOS referred to
as the environment. By using the internal DOS command SET, you
must assign a different ID number to each workstation involved in
Brainstorm on the network. The format for the ID setting is:
SET BSID=#
The # must be replaced by a unique integer between 1 and 1,000 for
each workstation. This command might be placed in each user's
AUTOEXEC.BAT file, or perhaps in the network login script for each
user.
Again, the BSID assignment is not required for Novell or PCMOS 386.
Failure to include properly unique ID number assignments for each
user in other environments could cause message contamination and
program lockups.
The workstation ID can be checked on each workstation by selecting
the INFO choice from within the Brainstorm program.

BSREPAIR
Repairing Damaged Message Databases
Brainstorm Supervisor's Guide
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
BSREPAIR
BSREPAIR.EXE is used by the supervisor to repair damaged databases,
correct user information, and to edit topic information. BSREPAIR
only needs to be run when a problem develops or major alterations
to the topic and user structures are necessary. There are two
command line options available when starting BSREPAIR, /M and /C.
The /M switch forces a monochrome display and /C forces color,
overriding the internal video mode detection feature. Use of these
switches may be useful on systems which are set to a different mode
when BSREPAIR is started.
Mouse support is not available in BSREPAIR.

The first three options in BSREPAIR allow the supervisor to re-
index the three databases within Brainstorm. This may become
necessary in the event of a system crash which causes inconsistency
between the data files and index files. Should the message or user
information appear incorrect, run the repair for each database as
indicated in the following paragraphs.
Repair User Database
The Repair User database menu option creates new index files based
on the valid data remaining in the user database. It is possible
that some recent user entries will be lost during the rebuild
process. A small status window displays the rebuild activity
during operation.
Repair Message Database
The Repair Message database menu option creates new index files
based on the valid data remaining in the message database. It is
possible that some recent messages will be lost during the rebuild
process. A small status window displays the rebuild activity
during operation.
Repair LastRead Database
The Repair LastRead Database menu option creates new index files
based on the valid data remaining in the database used for storing
each user's marker for the last read message for each topic. It is
possible that some recent markers will be lost during the rebuild
process. A small status window displays the rebuild activity
during operation.
The remaining two options allow the supervisor to modify and delete
users and topics.
